Using solar with insulation is a smart way to save. Insulation keeps your home cosy, so your solar panels don’t have to work as hard. Extra energy can be stored in a solar battery for cloudy days, or sold back to the grid. This makes solar power and insulation a cost-efficient way to power your home.
If you live in York, you can get a government grant to help pay for solar and insulation. Our advisers can help you find the best solution for your home. They can also connect you with suppliers to get it installed.

How do solar and insulation work together?
Solar panels turn sunlight into electricity and a battery stores this for later use. This means you can rely less on energy from the grid on cloudy days, saving you money.
Insulation is like a cosy blanket for your house. It keeps it warm and comfortable without needing to use much energy. When you do need energy, your solar panels and battery offer a more sustainable alternative.
There are a few insulation options to choose from:
Insulation type | What it does | Best for homes |
Loft insulation | Reduces heating loss in loft | With lots of loft space |
Room-in-roof insulation | Improves comfort in loft | With a converted loft |
Cavity wall insulation | Improves comfort throughout home | With limited inside space |
Internal wall insulation | Improves comfort throughout home | With lots of inside space |
External wall insulation | Improves comfort throughout home | With external wall access |
Underfloor insulation | Reduces heat loss through floors | With exposed or drafty floors |

What do solar and insulation combined solutions look like and where does it fit in your house?
Solar panels are flat and come in dark blue or black. They’re made from materials like silicon, glass, and aluminium. Each panel is about one and a half metres long and one metre wide.
A south-facing roof is the best spot for solar panels, but they can also work on west or east-facing roofs. A three-bedroom, semi-detached home will need around ten panels on the roof. There will be some wires to connect them to your home’s electricity and battery.
Solar batteries are small and compact boxes. They are roughly the size of a standard fridge freezer.
Insulation is usually less noticeable than solar panels and a battery. Here’s an idea of what it looks like and where it goes:
Insulation type | What does it look like? | Where does it go? |
Loft insulation | A soft and fluffy blanket | Between wooden beams in the loft |
Room-in-roof insulation | Can be soft and fluffy or solid | Between wooden beams and hard to reach corners of the loft |
Cavity wall insulation | A fluffy material or tiny beads | Fits between walls |
Internal wall insulation | Flat and rectangular panels | On inside walls |
External wall insulation | Solid insulating panels covered with weather proofed finish such as a render made from wood, or plastic. | On outside walls |
Underfloor insulation | Can be soft and fluffy like wool, or hard and firm. | Hidden under floor |
